В начале этого века Сирия активно развивалась по всем направлениям, включая образование, но война, начавшаяся в стране в 2011 г., привела к снижению уровня образования и деятельности библиотек вузов. В статье отражены особенности сирийских вузов и их библиотек, прежде всего четырёх наиболее крупных государственных университетов (Дамаск, Алеппо, Тишрин и Аль-Баас). Приведены основные характеристики 8 государственных и 22 частных вузов и фондов их библиотек. Библиотеки сирийских учебных заведений организованы по-разному: в государственных имеется единая библиотека университета и библиотеки факультетов, а в частных – только одна библиотека университета. Для индексирования фондов во всех библиотеках используется модифицированная и арабизированная классификация Дьюи; каталоги – карточные; современные информационные технологии не внедрены, попытки внедрения АБИС Koha и Horizon оказались неудачными. Авторами показаны предпосылки для разработки концептуальной, информационной и функциональной моделей сетевой информационной системы библиотек университетов, способной реализовать библиотечно-информационные процессы на современном уровне.
