ALTMETRICS: AWARENESS AND INTEREST

Abstract

The author of the article continues to study the possibilities of using altmetrics in reference and bibliographic services. The problem of determining the characteristics of the audience that is interested in getting altmetrics is solved. To find out what awareness and interest in altmetrics is in scientific community, an online survey was conducted, which involved 302 researchers.

The analysis of responses to questions about altmetrics is accompanied by information about the respondents' use of traditional scientometric information. It was found that with a high degree of interest in traditional scientometric indicators (91,4 % of respondents refer to them), altmetrics remain out of the field of view of most scientists. Only 6,6 % of respondents use altmetrics, while the rest are not familiar with altmetrics or do not use them. More than half of the respondents showed interest in altmetrics: 11,9 % consider it necessary, and 43 % would like to learn more about it.

A correlation was found between academic status and awareness of or interest in altmetrics: candidates of science and applicants for this degree are more interested in altmetrics information than doctors of science. The relationship between knowledge about altmetrics or interest in them with the place of work of the scientist is insignificant.

The results of the research can be used to improve the information support of scientists. The research model can be applied to other groups of library users.
