Development prospects of university libraries in the scientific information environment

The authors of the article clarify the concept of the university library, the features of the scientific information environment, systematize the historical stages of the development of university libraries in Russia, describe foreign experience in the development of libraries. The article analyzes the progressive changes concerning the activities of university libraries in the digital environment. The influence of the digital world development of society on the opening of new opportunities for the modernization of not only the educational sphere, but also university libraries is noted. The paper presents the regulatory framework for the activities of Russian university libraries, specifies their functions and areas of work. A number of models for organizing an electronic library are also presented, it is noted that the development of electronic libraries has become a consequence of the intensive development of world information processes, as a result, the demand for this type of service continues to grow. The results of the students’ survey regarding the efficiency of library services are given on the example of the library of Cherepovets State University, which confirmed the importance and relevance of library services for students. The weak and strong sides of the current state of the organization of library services are identified, the need for their further development, the strengthening of the marketing component in the activities and promotion of library services, and study of the needs of the target audience are emphasized. Further prospects for the development of university libraries are formulated.
