Abstract

The author examines the possible impact of pirate services providing access to scientific information on libraries. He names Sci-Hub service as a typical Internet service providing illegal access to research papers and materials. New potential challenges of illegal practices and services for research and academic libraries are formulated. The author emphasizes that new technologies of access to scientific knowledge require that the libraries analyze thoroughly and plan their own services; cooperate closely with publishers to promote new modern methods of access; design and build soft- and hardware packages in statistical control and user logging; control possible illegal activities; train users in appropriate use of science information specify the danger of using “grey” and “black” zones and services.
