Visual sources in a rare scientific book: the value of their digitalization
Abstract
The article defines the importance of digitalization of visual sources in a rare scientific book as a potential component of scientific research. The constant growth of information has caused the problem of selecting source in the modern world. Often an important part of it can be out of sight of the researcher, which leads to entropy of information. This is especially true for a rare scientific book and its visual component. Until recently, visual sources in a rare scientific book were not given due attention; they were considered mainly as film and photographic materials, posters, postcards, etc. and remained outside the scope of scientific research. The article proves that visual information in a rare scientific book is an important information source for science, because it has such qualities as accuracy, image clarity, reliability, informational content. The participation of the Library for Natural Sciences of the Russian Academy of Sciences in the programs of digitalization of library collections, in the development of digital libraries (DL) is shown. Several examples reveal the scientific and informational wealth of visual sources in a rare scientific book. Conclusions are drawn about the importance of digitalization of visual sources in the DL of rare books and the role of libraries in this as a way to expand the information base for specialized research in various fields of science, which in the future has practical significance.
