THE BOOK COMMUNICATION: METHODOLOGY OF INTERDISCIPLINARY STUDIES

Abstract

The article argues that a true understanding of book communications is possible only through the use of research tools from various disciplines of the field of humanities. By considering the evolution of the scientific community's views on the question of the book as a phenomenon of social communications it was possible to distinguish between its main stages and establish that at each of these stages the researchers were not limited to the apparatus of book sciences, but always turned to methodology of other sciences. The author's views on an interdisciplinary study of book communications are introduced. It is emphasized that the central place in such a study should be occupied by the socio-communicative approach, involving the consideration of the object of study under categories of the communicative process. The presented model is non-linear and composed of multiple levels. It covers both synchronous and diachronous sections of the communicative process, including feedback. For an accurate representation at the diachronic level, it is also necessary to use both the historical-genetic and the cultural approaches. To obtain a comprehensive understanding of the authorial and the readership roles in the structure of book communications, an application of works on literary theory represented by such concepts as receptive aesthetics, poststructuralism and hermeneutics is necessary. To understand the laws of book communications in the new information environment, it is necessary to apply the theories from the field of information sciences as well as those of postmodern philosophy. It is of methodological importance to use works that encompass such phenomena of the new communication environment as the Internet, hypertext, online literature, and collective authorship.
